AMFPHP: need some money for a Captivate license

Posted on Monday 25 July 2005

AMFPHP is stable and just about ready to be released but still needs some documentation, tutorials, example files, etc. Now every time I ask people for some help I usually receive the typical email:

Wow, I love AMFPHP, it's great, I'd like to contribute example files, how can I help?

To which I usually respond:

Great! We need this, this and this, and of course if you want to go off in your own direction, go ahead. Then send back the results my way. Or if you prefer, you can write your examples directly on the wiki. Thanks again!

And usually I never hear from them again. I'm starting to wonder whether there's something wrong with my email account ;)

In any event I've decided to take issues into my own hands and create some Captivate tutorials outlining installation, debugging, advanced techniques and such. These will be used IN ADDITION to the written material, as some things might be easier to pick up if they are seen visually and explained with my wonderful radio-approved voice. I'm thinking for example of getting familiar with the NetConnection debugger, the libraries, the browser, etc.

All I need now is your money for a (499$) Captivate license. After all the hard work I've put into AMFPHP, I just don't feel like paying it out of my own pocket. Any amount above that will be either split with the previous developers who send me an email or if there are none, will be spent on the most liquor-drenched 1.0 launch party ever where I will be whenever we launch (prospects are Vancouver, Calgary, Prince George, Seattle or Montreal, although I will gladly go wherever you will pay plane tickets for).

Donate here (to me personally, I don't have access to the project donations page).

And to anyone who doubted of the relevancy and success of a Remoting gateway for PHP, the recent stats should make the issue clear: 99.96 activity percentile on SourceForge, 10,000 hits per day, 59th most active project overall, right between SquirrelMail and phpBB. I wonder how much money MM would have made if they had developed a commercial gateway for PHP? Probably enough for a couple of Captivate licenses, right ;)

UPDATE: Yeah! I received my first donation just now. Here's the transcript:

Donated amount...........................: $5.00
PayPal fee...............................: $0.46
SourceForge.net fee......................: $1.00

TOTAL TO YOU.............................: $3.54

1$ fee... bastards! I'm guessing that's a fixed fee so the 10$ donation will probably have a better donation/fee ratio though.
