My ultimate wish for the Flash 8 IDE

Posted on Wednesday 20 July 2005

This is going to surprise many: a better library window. That’s it. That’s all I want. That and improved JSFL. If MM can do that, I’ll be a happy man.

Wait, what’s wrong with library window? Well, first of all, you can only open it once per movie. Makes sense right? Wrong! How many times have you attempted to clean your library and move things around and been frustrated by waiting for the library to scroll up or down while dragging an item? What I’ve been doing lately is right clicking and sending to a new folder, then dragging the items out of the new folder and then deleting the folder. If I could have two instances of the library window opened per movie, I could simply drag from one to the other at different scroll positions. And while there is a send to new folder option in the right click menu, why not a send to EXISTING folder option? Why can’t I set properties for similar items all at once (granted, Julian Dolce’s panel does that, but why can’t it be built-in)? What kind of a sick algorithm does it use when dragging a library item from one movie to the other when? Why is it that all of a sudden this movieclip overwrites that one but this folder ends up elsewhere and that other movieclip was renamed?

We’ll have to wait and see for Flash 8 to see how the new library stacks up. But I bet it won’t have the ultimate feature I am wishing for as I am scrambling through two different versions of the same file that have tiny differences: a two pane library panel with scroll locking and integrated diff. Have you used UltraCompare? That’s what I want. Those library items have timestamps, they have signatures also I’m presuming, so why can’t we diff two libraries? With the current state of JSFL I’m not sure it would be feasible as a standalone panel either, but hopefully the new JSFL will be more powerful and someone will come up with such a windowSWF. I would pay several hundreds of dollars to have such a panel. I’m sure several others would. Anyone looking to make a quick buck, this is a great opportunity ;)
