Windows Vista Ctrl+Tab 3d effect: source code

Posted on Wednesday 18 October 2006

I have to give a presentation tomorrow on the new features in Flash 8, so instead of boring people to death with talk about filters, I figured I’d do a few demos to showcase some of the possibilities of BitmapData. For this one, I used DistortImage and Fuse to recreate the Ctrl+Tab 3d window effect in Windows Vista. Now in the real Vista, the current window doesn’t rotate into place into the window stack, but I think this transition is much cooler. Check it out here. Press space to start the animation.

Now I didn’t bother to recycle the right most window so that it appears in the back but that wouldn’t be too much trouble (right now, only three windows appear in the stack while there should be 4 at all times). It’s not exactly fullproof, but it’s a start. Here is the source. Up next: a webcam cube! Does anybody have any cube face-sorting algorithm handy? (using squares, not triangles for each of the faces).
